How to Write a Good IELTS Essay Introduction

Parts of an IELTS essay introduction

  1. Hook

This is a sentence with interest but it’s not necessarily needed in IELTS essay by the examiners. This is because you don’t have much time. In IELTS essay, you are usually given 40 minutes time to analyze, plan and check your work so you won’t want to spend it on something that will not profit you at the end.

  1. Background statement

This is where you paraphrase your question. You don’t change the meaning of the question rather you change the words and vocabulary while still keeping the meaning. Don’t copy the question word for word.

  1. Thesis statement

This is where you give your answer to the question; it is an opinion essay or an agree/disagree essay. It is where you introduce your ideas.

IELTS opinion essay answers questions such as

  1. Do I need to give my opinion? This depends on the instructions given to you in the IELTS exam. To what extent do you agree/disagree?

Answer: I somewhat agree…

  I partially agree…   (This shows you are not 100% sure)

            I am confident that…

I totally agree that…      (This shows you are 100% sure)

  1. Can I use “I” or “my”? This depends on the instructions given to you in the IELTS exam. Were you told to give your opinion? You can give your opinion starting with the following examples: In my opinion, In my view, and I believe
  2. How can I express my opinion? This also depends on the instructions given to you in the IELTS exam. There are many ways you can express your opinion
  3. In my opinion, boys and girls should go to the same school
  4. I would argue that…
  5. From my point of view, boys and girls should go to a separate school

How to Start an IELTS Essay Introduction

You first paraphrase the question which forms part of the background statement.

Example:

Question: Schooling is the most significant element in the evolution of a nation. To what extent do you agree/disagree?

Paraphrasing the question, we have:  Education is the essential part of a nation’s development

You don’t have to completely change the word… just retain the meaning of the question.

To answer the question in the thesis statement, you say: In my opinion, I agree that education is the key to a nation’s growth although some people might believe it is not. Consequently, they believe that education is a waste of time and money.

You Have Your Introduction Thus:

Education is the essential part of a nation’s development. In my opinion, I agree that education is the key to a nation’s growth although some people might believe it is not. Consequently, they believe that education is a waste of time and money.

How to Start the Main Body Paragraph 1 of an IELTS Essay

The main body of IELTS essay writing forms the bulk of the essay.

The paragraph structure includes:

  1. Topic sentence
  2. Explanation
  3. Example

In the main body paragraph 1 of an IELTS essay, you elaborate your points giving detailed explanations of your idea or opinion in agreement/disagreement with the question. Present a clear central topic in each paragraph and try to be logically organized. You also give your examples using linking devices.

In the main body paragraph 2 of an IELTS essay, you discuss probable solutions to the question and give a result

These attributes are possessed and exhibited by humans who are the people especially those who come out to lead. These are an identity of a nation with educated citizens. For example, the United States of America and United Kingdom that are ruling the world.

Furthermore, these countries invent many technologies, provide cure to diseases through research and medicine which makes the world worth living in. These are possible because of the quality education standard they have. There are high rate of immigrants in these countries, people with different purpose; schooling, work, investment, and relaxation.

Points to consider in writing IELTS essay conclusion

  1. Do not introduce new ideas
  2. Summarize your main points from the main paragraph
  3. Do not repeat words (Paraphrase)
  4. Do not explain your points
  5. Answer the question
